The History Of The Nuffield Foundation

William Morris, later to become Lord Nuffield, was Britain's greatest ever philanthropist and gave away over £30m of his fortune – which is equivalent to £700m in today's money!

Born in 1877, William Morris was a grandson of a farmer. He designed his first car, the Morris Oxford in 1912 and became an ambassador of the British motor industry during its golden era – he was later made a peer, as Lord Nuffield, in 1934.

Morris donated millions to medical research and funded Nuffield College, Oxford. In 1943 he gave £10 million to set up the Nuffield Foundation which in 1947, recognising the linkage between health and good agricultural practices, began to fund scholarships for British farmers to travel in the footsteps of William Morris.

Today, Nuffield offers a unique opportunity for agribusiness professionals to get to know the world by researching, in practice, a topic of importance within their agricultural experience. Over its 70 years, the Nuffield network has brought together more than 2,000 participants around the world.

The Nuffield mission is to lead positive change in agriculture - inspiring passion and potential in people:

  • Building knowledge through global experience
  • Sharing brilliant ideas
  • Making things happen
  • Developing tomorrow’s leaders
  • Inspiring commitment
